Lariat necklaces are one of the most versatile style necklaces available today. Ranging anywhere from 42" to 52", lariat necklaces are much longer then traditional necklaces, which allows you to create several different styes of necklace from just one piece. Additionally, since they are long enough to wrap around your neck two or more times, they appear to be multiple strand necklaces vs. just one lariat necklace. Because a lariat necklace is constructed by stringing beads onto just one strand of wire, they are relatively simple to make. The ends are unattached so they can be adorned with “fringe” to create a tassel look. These tassels can be simple or fancy to finish off a relatively simple design.

A lariat necklace can be wrapped, twisted or simply tied to create the look you desire. Recently, lariat necklaces have gained popularity due to their creative, yet simple design. When designing your lariat necklace, first choose the colors you want to include in the design. Keep in mind that you will be using many more beads when making a lariat necklace than you would need for a traditional 17”-19” necklace. For this reason you will want to be sure to use a stronger wire than usual, and save those very heavy beads for a shorter strand project. Seed beads strung in a random fashion can make a simple design beautiful when a focal bead or sterling accent is added. The lariat necklace is also designed a little differently in that the ends become the focal point of the piece vs. the center being the attention getter. It is a good idea to leave the center rather simple and save the ornate, more expensive beads for the last 10” of the lariat necklace. |
