Once you start working with fimo clay you will be amazed with its versatility.  Though fimo clay jewelry is not really made from a true clay; it is produced in factories vs. dug up from the earth.  It is quite malleable in its raw form and becomes hard after firing.  Baking is the actual “firing” process, so few materials are needed to get started making fimo clay jewelry.  The oven temperatures are between 215 to 275 degrees.  The properties of fimo clay keep it in its original shape even after being baked.  And it is easy to sand or drill holes for jewelry making.  Its shelf life is another plus for fimo clay, at up to two years, and even longer if refrigerated.  Once fired the fimo clay is very hard and almost indestructible.

Each polymer-clay brand is made with its own "recipe," using various resins, plasticizers and other secret ingredients, each optimized for a different usage.  You may end up choosing one brand for your sculptures or free-form jewelry, and another brand for millefiore cane work.

Hints for working with polymer clays:

• Work on paper to minimize handling and fingerprints.

• Buy ceramic tile from your local building supply to bake pieces on.

• To tint clay, use non-toxic blushes or eye shadows.

• Adding gold will make colors warmer; silver adds a cool tone.

• Conditioning your clay in a pasta machine works great and is a very popular method.  This works especially well for FIMO, which can become laborious when  hand conditioned.

• There are many How To books on making your own clay.  Or, there are pre-made cames that you can use instead.

• You can transfer copier images onto your clay by just placing the sheet on the fimo clay and waiting for it to take.

• If sanding is required, do it prior to glazing, or lightly buff with a 400 grit followed by 600 grit wet/dry sandpaper under running water.  This is not typically required when making beads for jewelry.
